The High Point University campus was buzzing when students received the latest update on the spring concert.
"Dear HPU students, regrettably Jason Derulo will no longer be able to perform," says the Campus Concierge. "However you'll be excited to know that Grammy-award winning performer Lupe Fiasco will headline the #HPUSpringConcert."
By dictionary definition, a fiasco, is a complete and ignominious failure. However, the concert was not a bust. The air was filled with tunes and a clear night sky hovered above as students filled the lawn to watch Lupe Fiasco. He put on quite an entertaining performance.
"The new songs were good but it was great when he played his old stuff," said student Kyle Smith. "He even did 'Go Go Gadget Flow'."
Fiasco put on quite the show that's for sure. Music could be heard streets away and lights were flashing all through the night. As soon as you enter the venue, students flooded the area; some sober, some not so much. Everyone was dancing and jumping, enjoying the sounds of the hip hop beats. Fiasco seemed to really get a rise out of the crowd.
"This one goes out to all my trust fund homies," said Fiasco.
Referencing to students as "trust fund homies" didn't sit well with some. It seemed pretty daring to try and poke fun at the people you are trying to entertain. But Fiasco was just giving back what the crowd was throwing at him, literally. A blow up beach ball had taken aim for the DJ at one point and remarks such as, "I have more money than you" were being shot at Fiasco from certain members of the crowd. All is fair in love and money so Fiasco did what any entertainer would do and make those with the comments put up or shut up. Audience members called it quits with the jabs and learned to just enjoy the music.
Close quarters caused for a smell of sweat in the air, but all that was overlooked as Fiasco captivated the audience. He jumped and moved and put on an entertaining performance. By the end, the whole crowd was singing along to his songs.
"I remember hearing 'The Show Goes On' and not one person didn't know the words," says Senior Erin R. "That one really got everyone going."
Overall the concert was a success. When the music stopped, the noise kept going. As people were leaving the concert, yelling and cheering had yet to cease. People still seemed ready for round number two. Students and their guests came out to enjoy the fun and left with smiles on their faces.
